Owls Oil adjustable vape battery for a reusable vape setup

Reusable vs Disposable Vapes: Which Should You Switch To?

Last updated: 30 September 2026

If you are choosing between a disposable and a reusable vape in Ireland, the decision is changing fast.

Disposables are still the simplest option: open the pack, use the device, and replace it when the oil or hardware is finished. A reusable vape takes a little more setup, but it gives you more control over cartridge choice and battery voltage. It can also reduce the amount of hardware you throw away.

There is now a legal reason to understand the difference. Ireland’s Public Health (Single-Use Vapes) Act 2026 is already in force, and the prohibition on selling single-use vapes takes effect on 24 January 2027 after the current transition period.

For the wider rules on tax, age limits, licensing and the single-use transition, read our Irish Vape Laws 2026 guide.

Important: Ireland’s Act does not treat every rechargeable device as reusable. A system needs to meet the statutory refillability and rechargeability tests. Check the specification of the battery, cartridge and coil system before relying on any setup as outside the single-use definition.

The Quick Answer

A disposable is easier on day one. A reusable vape usually makes more sense if you vape regularly and are comfortable replacing cartridges, charging a battery and choosing a heat setting.

  • Disposables: less setup, one complete device, more hardware discarded.
  • Reusable systems: higher starting cost, lower replacement-hardware cost, more control over cartridges and voltage.
  • Ireland: single-use vape sales are due to be prohibited from 24 January 2027, while genuinely reusable systems are treated differently under the Act.

If you are already planning for 2027, learning how a battery-and-cartridge setup works now is sensible. Just make sure the hardware you choose actually meets the legal definition rather than relying on the word “rechargeable” in a product name.

Reusable vs Disposable Vapes Compared

Feature Disposable vape Reusable vape
Upfront cost Usually lower for one device Higher because you buy a battery plus cartridge
Cost over time You replace the complete device You keep the battery and replace or refill the cartridge
Waste Battery, electronics and tank are discarded together Main battery can remain in use while the cartridge is replaced
Flavour choice Limited to the oil already inside the device Can use compatible pre-filled or empty cartridges
Effort Very little setup Requires charging, cartridge changes and basic maintenance
Battery control Usually fixed or device-specific Adjustable batteries can offer multiple voltage settings
Irish legal outlook Single-use sales prohibited from 24 January 2027 Reusable systems can remain outside the single-use definition if they meet the Act’s requirements

Neither format is automatically better for every person. The real question is what you value most: minimum setup or greater control with less disposable hardware.

What Is a Reusable Vape Pen?

A reusable vape pen separates the power source from the part that contains the oil.

Instead of throwing away the whole device, you keep the battery and replace or refill the cartridge when needed. Many compact oil-vape systems use the common 510 connection, although you should always check the specification of the battery and cartridge before buying.

The Battery

The battery supplies power to the heating element in the cartridge.

Some batteries use one fixed voltage. Others let you change the voltage so you can run the cartridge cooler or hotter.

Owls Oil’s Adjustable Vape Battery is currently €20 and lists three voltage settings:

  • White: 1.6V
  • Blue: 2.2V
  • Red: 2.8V

Lower settings generally put less heat through the oil. That can be useful with thick cannabinoid oils because excessive heat can affect flavour and may contribute to burnt pulls or clogging.

Our How to Use a THCA Vape guide covers charging, heat settings and storage in more detail.

The Cartridge

The cartridge contains the oil and the coil that heats it.

Owls Oil currently lists an Empty 1ml Cartridge for €4.50 and an Empty 2ml Cartridge for €8.00. The 1ml product is specifically sold as an empty cartridge that you can add oil to.

That matters under the Irish Act. A separately available replacement container can form part of a refillable system, and a coil can be replaced as part of that container where the container is separately available and replaceable during normal use.

The full setup still has to satisfy the rechargeability test as well. A refillable cartridge by itself does not make the complete vape legally reusable.

The Real Cost Over a Year

Cost comparisons only work if the assumptions are clear.

At the time of writing, Owls Oil lists:

  • Adjustable Vape Battery: €20
  • Empty 1ml Cartridge: €4.50
  • Empty 2ml Cartridge: €8.00
  • 50g Owls Original Blend: €200

For someone using the equivalent of one 1ml cartridge per month, the reusable hardware maths can be calculated directly from the current battery and empty-cartridge prices.

Reusable Hardware Example

One €20 battery plus twelve €4.50 empty 1ml cartridges:

€20 + (12 × €4.50) = €74 in first-year hardware

Spread across twelve 1ml fills, that is about:

€6.17 of hardware per 1ml fill in year one

If the same battery is still serviceable in year two, the replacement cartridge cost would be €4.50 per 1ml fill, before oil.

This is a hardware-only figure. It should not be presented as a complete disposable-versus-reusable saving because a filled disposable includes oil as well as the device, while the reusable calculation above covers the battery and empty cartridge only.

For a rough DIY illustration, the active 50g jar of Owls Original Blend is €200, or €4 per gram. One gram should not be silently treated as exactly one millilitre: oil density, filling losses and formulation can change the actual yield. That is why the oil and hardware maths are kept separate here.

The useful takeaway is simpler. With a reusable setup, you stop buying a new battery and outer device every time you need another fill. Your total saving then depends on what oil you use, how often you replace cartridges and how long the battery lasts.

How to Switch to a Reusable Vape in Three Steps

1. Choose the Battery First

Start with a battery that matches the cartridges you plan to use.

Check the connection type, charging method and voltage range. Do not assume every cartridge fits every battery.

Owls Oil’s Adjustable Vape Battery is listed at €20 and offers 1.6V, 2.2V and 2.8V settings. Check the full hardware specification before relying on it as a compliance solution under the Irish single-use rules.

2. Choose the Cartridge

You can use a compatible pre-filled cartridge or fill an empty cartridge with an appropriate oil.

For DIY users, Owls Oil currently offers empty 1ml and 2ml cartridges. If you are using a thick cannabinoid oil, work carefully and follow the product instructions rather than overfilling or forcing cold oil into the hardware.

The Owls Original Blend product page has the current product information for customers building their own oil-and-cart setup.

3. Start With Lower Heat

More voltage does not automatically mean a better vape.

Start at the lower end of the battery’s range and increase only if the cartridge needs it. High heat can make the vapour harsher, use oil faster and increase the chance of burnt flavour.

If the cart starts pulling poorly, read Why Is My THCA Vape Clogged? before pushing the voltage higher.

Common Mistakes When Switching From Disposables

Using Too Much Voltage

A new adjustable battery can tempt people to start at the highest setting. That is usually unnecessary.

With thick THCA oil, lower to mid voltage is often the better starting point. Owls Oil’s own vape guidance recommends lower heat where voltage control is available.

Buying the Wrong Connection

“Vape pen” is a broad term. Battery and cartridge connections are not automatically universal.

If you are buying a 510 vape pen, confirm that both the battery and cartridge are actually 510-compatible before ordering.

Storing Cartridges on Their Side

Store filled cartridges upright at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.

Leaving thick oil on its side for long periods can contribute to leaking, airflow problems and clogging. Cold conditions can also thicken high-THCA oil.

Pulling Too Hard

A harder draw is not always a stronger draw. Thick oil needs time to move toward the coil.

Use shorter, gentler pulls and give the cartridge a moment between uses. If the airflow feels restricted, treat the cause rather than repeatedly pulling harder.

Treating “Rechargeable” as the Same as “Reusable”

This is especially important in Ireland.

Under the Single-Use Vapes Act, the battery is only one part of the test. The vape also needs to meet the refillability rules, and the coil needs to be replaceable during normal use, including through a separately available replacement cartridge where applicable.

Our Irish Vape Laws 2026 guide explains the single-use definition and transition timeline.

So, Which Should You Switch To?

If convenience is your only priority during the current transition period, a disposable remains simpler.

If you vape regularly and want to keep the battery while changing cartridges, a reusable vape pen gives you more control and cuts down on the amount of electronic hardware discarded with each fill.

Ireland’s 2027 rule makes the hardware choice more important. From 24 January 2027, products that meet the statutory definition of a single-use vape cannot be sold. A properly designed reusable system sits on the other side of that distinction.

If you are considering a battery-and-cartridge setup, start with the Owls Oil Adjustable Vape Battery, an Empty 1ml Cartridge, or browse the full DIY Kits collection. Check the full hardware specification against the Irish requirements before treating any particular setup as legally reusable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a vape pen the same as a reusable vape?

Not always. “Vape pen” describes the shape and general type of device, not its legal classification. A vape pen can be reusable if its battery, cartridge and coil system meet the relevant reuse requirements.

Are reusable vapes cheaper?

The hardware portion can cost less over time because the battery can stay in use while you replace the cartridge. Your total cost still depends on the oil you choose, cartridge replacement frequency, battery life and shipping costs.

Do reusable vapes taste better?

Not automatically. Flavour depends on the oil formulation as well as the coil and heat setting. An adjustable battery does give you more control over voltage, which can make it easier to find a setting that suits a particular cartridge.

What is a 510 vape pen?

A 510 vape pen uses the widely adopted 510-style threaded connection between the battery and cartridge. Always confirm the specification on both components before buying because similar-looking devices can use different connections.

Will reusable vapes be banned in Ireland?

Ireland’s Public Health (Single-Use Vapes) Act 2026 prohibits the sale of single-use vapes from 24 January 2027. It does not impose a blanket ban on reusable vapes. To fall outside the single-use definition, a system must meet the Act’s requirements for refillability and rechargeability.

Can I use the same battery with different cartridges?

Only where the cartridge is compatible with the battery. Check the thread or connection, recommended voltage range and any manufacturer instructions before attaching a different cartridge.
